Hallie is the new girl at school, and she doesn't know anyone. One night after school, she tells her mom that someone followed her home from school even though she took a different way home to be safe. She arranges to have a phone call with the police department where a detective will be on the line so she can tell him what happened. Hallie thinks this will scare off whoever is stalking her, but on the contrary-it only leads to more harassment from other girls at school who think Hallie is being too dramatic about the whole thing. The next day at school, Hallie tries to find a way to make friends and be accepted. She is particularly interested in the clique called "The Plastics" because they seem like they have all the power. They make fun of everyone else and put on a mean girl act, but at the same time they look really cool and popular. Hallie tries following them around for a while until one of the Plastics (Gretchen Wieners) tells her that she can't follow them around all day if she isn't going to buy anything. Hallie still wants to be like them, so she decides she'll make friends with someone in the Plastics. She makes friends with Karen Smith (Lizzy Caplan), who is one of the cheerleaders and always wins awards for everything. She likes the fact that there are certain things that Karen will never do (like watch television or read a book), but she seems to like her anyway. However, Karen also believes that everyone has to wear what they bought at "Gap" or "Loft" or "Hot Topic" and that Hallie can't catch up with them if she doesn't shop there too. Hallie's life becomes more and more miserable as the years go on. She is constantly bullied by the Plastics, who are now in high school. She gets her period at age 11, so she can't join them because she doesn't want to embarrass herself at their parties. She also has problems with her self-esteem and confidence. Her parents are always busy with their own lives or preoccupied with their divorce, and her older sister (whose name is never told) is very close with Karen (who is now in college). One day, Hallie follows Karen into a local bookstore where they're looking for books to teach English literature to the remedial classes in the high school. Karen is researching how many pages her book has to have to win the class award. Hallie tries to tell her about the irony in what she's doing, but Karen doesn't want to hear it. Hallie sees Karen bully the cashier over a small amount. She also sees Karen pocket some samples of perfume with no intention of buying them.
